As part of our commitment to the environment, and to reduce our impact on climate change, we have been working with carbon offset company co2balance to run Business North West as a CarbonZero event.
The carbon dioxide that will be created as a result of Business North West will be offset through African energy efficiency and forestry projects, making it a CarbonZero event.
Working with co2balance, we have calculated the carbon emissions that the conference will produce through delegate travel, as well as heating and lighting of the venue. The offsetting projects that co2balance run will then balance out these emissions.
Working with co2balance we have invested funds into their UK and African carbon offsetting projects:

Trees are planted to naturally absorb carbon as they grow. They are a mix of broadleaf native trees, including English Oak, Ash, Silver Birch and Alder. The trees are planted on their own land in ensure complete control over their future. Once the woodlands are completed and mature they are turned into community woodlands owned by a charitable trust, so the local area can benefit from carbon offsetting as well as the environment.

co2balance works with local social groups in East Africa to replace the use of open fires for cooking with energy efficient cooking stoves. These stoves are made entirely in East Africa and significantly reduce the firewood that they traditionally use, producing far less carbon emissions that would have otherwise been created. There are additional spin-off benefits of saving the user time and money in collecting or buying food wood, as well as health and safety benefits.
It is widely accepted amongst meteorologists and scientists that the Earth’s atmosphere is warming, and that carbon dioxide is the main cause of this. Carbon dioxide is an inevitable product of the way we all live today, and is produced primarily through the burning of fossil fuels. As well as reducing our carbon emissions we can take action to offset our carbon footprint, and that is why we have made Business North West and our other business event, Business Yorkshire, CarbonZero.
